The former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) appears to be seeking retribution during his trial for fraud and official misconduct while in office.
Rumors suggest that the recent invasion of Aliko Dangote’s office by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) may be linked to a falling out between Dangote and the ex-CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele.
Emefiele reportedly attempted to contact Dangote from detention, but Dangote allegedly ignored his attempts, as well as requests for assistance from Emefiele’s family related to the ongoing trial.
Frustrated, Emefiele reportedly cooperated with the anti-graft agency, implicating several associates, some of whom have distanced themselves from him.
The EFCC's search of the Dangote Group's office during Emefiele's tenure as CBN governor has led to speculation that Emefiele is seeking revenge against Dangote, whom he believes betrayed him. This development has also been confirmed by Dele Oyewale, the EFCC’s spokesman.
Emefiele’s suspension from office and subsequent trial have been linked to a scandal involving the borrowing of $1 billion just before the inauguration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's new administration. Shocking revelations have emerged about the handling of these funds, including a swift transfer of $750 million to Dangote’s Dubai accounts, raising concerns about integrity and potential abuse of power.
President Tinubu took decisive action by suspending Emefiele and initiating a thorough investigation of his tenure as CBN governor. Emefiele is facing a 20-count charge over an alleged conspiracy to carry out procurement fraud, among others.
The relationship between Emefiele and Dangote, once close, has deteriorated significantly, with the two men now distant from their previous chummy rapport.
Emefiele, feeling frustrated, reportedly provided extensive information to the anti-graft agency, implicating many of his associates who have since distanced themselves from him. As a result, when the EFCC conducted a search at the Lagos head office of the Dangote Group regarding forex allocations during Emefiele's tenure as CBN governor, many speculated that Emefiele was seeking retribution against Dangote, whom he believed had betrayed him. This development has been confirmed by Dele Oyewale, the EFCC's spokesman.
On June 9, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu suspended Emefiele from office, citing ongoing investigations into his office and planned reforms in the financial sector. Emefiele's suspension and subsequent trial have been linked to a significant scandal involving the borrowing of $1 billion just before President Tinubu's new administration took office.
Revelations have emerged about Emefiele's actions in obtaining the funds, alleging that he borrowed $1 billion from Afrexim Bank on April 24, 2023, and swiftly transferred $750 million to Aliko Dangote's Dubai accounts using a Form A transaction within two days of receiving the money. These revelations have raised concerns about integrity, collusion, and potential abuse of power, with claims that President-Elect Tinubu was kept in the dark about this transaction.
The magnitude and nature of the transaction are deeply concerning. According to sources within the CBN, Emefiele allegedly sold the dollars to Dangote at an unusually low rate of N445 Naira to the dollar.
On April 24, 2023, $1 billion was deposited into the CBN JP Morgan account from Afrexim Bank. Within two days, $750 million was swiftly transferred to Dangote’s Bluestar Dubai account using the “Form A” transaction method, bypassing the requirement of a Letter of Credit. Bluestar has been linked to Dangote since 2007.
Although some CBN officials raised concerns about these transactions, the revelations highlight the potential for money laundering and illicit activities within Nigeria’s financial system, casting doubt on the CBN’s integrity during Emefiele’s tenure.

Emefiele, who is reportedly seeking a plea bargain in the criminal suit filed against him by the federal government, is facing a 20-count charge over an alleged conspiracy to carry out procurement fraud, among other charges.
Beware the wrath of a friend scorned, especially one as patient and relentless as Godwin Emefiele. It's worth noting that Emefiele and Dangote shared a close relationship before Emefiele's dismissal and subsequent trial, but their friendship soured. At the time, Dangote spared no expense in nurturing his bond with the former CBN governor, even going as far as loaning his private jet to Emefiele on multiple occasions. This privilege allowed Emefiele to avoid the hassles of commercial air travel and to enjoy the opulence and comfort of flying in the private aircraft of Africa's wealthiest billionaire and philanthropist.
However, those days are long gone, and the once-close relationship between the two men has significantly deteriorated.
